Phil Cannella is a Philadelphia native who has spent almost four decades helping seniors overcome their challenges. It was an early family tragedy that put Phil on his lifelong path. His grandfather suffered a stroke and his family faced financial devastation. Phil’s father, already working long hours as a milkman, had to take a second job and Phil had to drop out of college to help out. But Phil made a career out of the lessons of that tragedy by pioneering long-term-care insurance in the 1970s. Many of the contracts that he designed are still in use.
As the years passed Phil expanded his knowledge of retiree finances so that he could be an even greater resource to his clients. He worked hard to become an expert in IRA rules and IRS regulations. He later put many of these insights into a book, Crash-Proof Retirement: The Planning Isn’t Over, which he now gives away at his educational events. Around the same time, he founded First Senior Financial Group in order to help retirees “crash proof” their nest eggs so that they don’t lose money when the stock market declines or even crashes.
Phil Cannella
Phil is a passionate believer that retirees have no business putting their money into stocks, bonds and mutual funds. At the educational events he holds throughout the tri-state area (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware) he stresses the difference between “accumulation-phase” advisors and “retirement-phase” advisors. Phil explains how financially reckless it is for retirees to continue to work with accumulation-phase advisors. He also stresses the importance of dealing with an advisor who truly cares.
In 2008 when leading media companies refused to give him air time to tell retirees that there was a safe haven for them away from stocks and bonds, Phil used his own money to launch The Crash Proof Retirement Show. In addition to informing retiree listeners of crash proof alternatives, he has embarked on a campaign to get straight answers from top officials regarding the tough issues that affect seniors’ lives. He has personally conducted interviews with Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick, FBI Cyber-Crime expert Brian Herrick, SEC Inspector General H. David Kotz and others.
